TIME STANDS
STILL
By
Bob Thornhill
In
memory of my (non-waterproof) watch,
which inadvertently visited the 14
metre
mark at South Channel Fort.
Why
are your hands so dark and
still?
And
your numbers
no longer glow?
You
really
needed to grow a gill
For
you’ve been
to the bottom of the sea-o.
When
getting wet
you’re not at your best
You’ve
gone to Stop from Slow
I
think you’ve
failed your pressure test
‘cos
you’ve been
to the bottom of the sea-o.
Two
chronometers
had Captain Cook
When
around the
world he would go
But
you’re not
worth a second look
Since
you’ve
been to the bottom of the sea-o.
Your
band is
washed so pure and clean
But
mould on
your face will grow
It’s
clear to
see just where you’ve been
Yes,
you’ve been
to the bottom of the sea-o.
You’ve
moved
your last; you’re caked with salt
As
water round
your cogs did flow
I
know it really
is my fault
‘cos I took
you to the bottom of the sea-o.
